Nutrient Analysis

Commonly referred to as Typical Nutrient Analysis (NA), this describes the nutrient content that a specific pet food formula is expected to achieve based on data from the formula database, or in some cases, from an actual laboratory assay. The goal in posting the Typical NA is to provide nutritionists and veterinarians with information that can aid in the treatment of clinical problems such as a cat with struvite or in working with overly obese dogs to prescribe feeding amounts and diet choice for the animal's success. For more information, read our NA FAQ's.

Ingredients

Beef

Beef is the clean flesh derived from slaughtered cows and is limited to that part of the striate muscle which is skeletal or that which is found in the tongue, in the diaphragm, in the heart, or in the esophagus; with or without the accompanying and overlying fat and the portions of the skin, sinew, nerve, and blood vessels which normally accompany the flesh.

Natura uses only high-quality beef, not beef by-products found in some other products.

Beef Broth

Beef broth is obtained by cooking beef, including bones and/or muscle, much the same process as making a stock.

Beef broth adds moisture and increases the protein and palatability level of food.

Lamb Broth

Broth or stock, made from lamb meat.

Barley

Barley is a major food and animal feed crop, a member of the grass family Poaceae. Ground barley is the entire barley kernel, ground or chopped.

Ground Barley is a good quality source of carbohydrates. Because Natura uses the entire barley kernel, it contributes additional protein, barley oil, bran, vitamins and minerals to the diet.

Dried Egg Whites

Egg whites are one of the best sources of protein that can be found in nature. They are also lower in fat than a whole egg since the egg yolk has been removed.

Potato Starch

Potato starch is used in our Flex products to hold our meat chunks and flakes together along with egg just like making meatballs in your home kitchen. This is in contrast to the industry norm where a by-product like liver is used as a binder.

Peas

Green peas are a variable annual leguminous Eurasian vine that is cultivated for its rounded smooth or wrinkled edible seeds.

Green peas are a fresh vegetable source of protein and contain a good source of vitamin A. Natura uses high-quality peas in some of our treats.

Cranberries

Cranberries grow on a low, creeping shrub with slender, wiry stems. The fruit is a berry that is larger than the leaves of the plant. It is initially white, but turns a deep red when fully ripe.

Oat Fiber

Oat fiber is a white, fine-grained dietary fiber obtained through the processing of oats. It is a class of plant carbohydrate that resists digestion hydrolysis.

Natural Flavors

Natural flavors are flavor ingredients that do not contain synthetic or artificial components.

In the Natura products that include "natural flavor" in the formula, the exact composition is proprietary. However, it is always made from high quality all natural ingredients, consistent with Natura's nutritional philosophy.

Guar Gum

Guar gum is derived from the ground endosperm of the guar plant. It is a gelatinous substance from the legume family that contains protein and polysaccharides. Guar gum is considered GRAS (generally recognized as safe).

Guar gum is used as an emulsifier, thickener, and stabilizer in foods.

Calcium Carbonate

Calcium carbonate is a mineral that is true to its name by containing a minimum of 38% calcium.

The calcium in bone provides structural integrity to the skeleton and also contributes to the maintenance of proper blood calcium levels through ongoing resorption and deposition. Circulating calcium has essential roles in nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, blood coagulation, the activation of certain enzyme systems, the maintenance of normal cell-membrane permeability and transport, and cardiac function.

Sunflower Oil

(naturally preserved with mixed Tocopherols) Sunflower oil is obtained by extracting oil from sunflower seeds.

Natura uses sunflower oil to provide the essential fatty acid, linoleic acid, which is important for good skin and coat health.

Sodium Phosphate

Phosphorus is a naturally occurring substance that is important in every cell in the body. The majority of phosphorus in the body is found in the bones. The potassium and sodium salt forms of phosphorus are called phosphates.

Herring Oil

(naturally preserved with mixed Tocopherols) Herring oil is the oil extracted from whole herring.

Herring oil provides a rich source of Omega 3 fatty acids. Because the herring that Natura uses is of such high quality, the herring oil helps produce healthy skin and lustrous coats.

Potassium Chloride

A chemical compound, KCl, a colorless or white, cubic, crystalline compound that closely resembles common salt (sodium chloride). It is soluble in water, alcohol, and alkalies.

Potassium plays various roles in metabolism and body functions. It assists in the regulation of the acid-base balance and water balance in the blood and the body tissue. It assists in protein synthesis from amino acids and in carbohydrate metabolism.

L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate

L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate is a more stable form of vitamin C.

Tricalcium Phosphate

Calcium is a principal inorganic component of bone. As much as 99% of the body's calcium is found in the skeleton. Calcium is a mineral that is found naturally in foods. Calcium is necessary for many normal functions of the body, especially bone formulation and maintenance. Calcium can also bind to other minerals (such as phosphate) and aid in their removal from the body.

Calcium phosphate is used to prevent calcium deficiencies.

Choline Chloride

Choline chloride is a vitamin "like" essential nutrient.

It is necessary to nerve function and fat metabolism and can be manufactured in the body but not at a sufficient rate to meet health requirements.

Salt

Salt is a natural mineral, necessary for life and good health.

Salt provides several essential nutrients, such as sodium and chloride, as well as important trace minerals. The average sodium level in our food and treats is currently 0.9 g/Mcal, which is considered low by industry standards, but still supplies the nutrients your pet's body requires.

Magnesium Citrate

A very bioavailable source of the essential mineral, magnesium.

Glucosamine Hydrochloride

Glucosamine hydrochloride is a compound that occurs naturally in the cartilage cushioning the joints.

Glucosamine, together with chondroitin sulfate, is believed to support the cartilage matrix.

Chondroitin Sulfate

Chondroitin sulfate is a long chain carbohydrate derived from connective tissue.

Chondroitin sulfate naturally occurs in the cartilage cushioning our joints. Given in additional amounts, with glucosamine, it is believed to attract fluid back into joint cartilage, helping maintain the cartilage matrix.

Butter

Butter is a dairy product made by churning fresh or fermented cream or milk. Butter is used as a spread, as a condiment and in cooking applications such as baking, sauce making, and frying.

Butter consists of butterfat surrounding minuscule droplets consisting mostly of water and milk proteins. The most common form of butter is made from cows' milk.

DL Methionine

Methionine (dL-Methionine) is a sulfur-containing amino acid obtained by the hydrolysis of most common proteins. Methionine is a principle supplier of sulfur which is important in production of many other compounds in the body.

dl-methionine regulates the formation of ammonia and creates ammonia-free urine. dl-methionine is an essential amino acid. Natura adds this supplement to cat foods. In our dog foods, the meat supplies sufficient amounts.

L-Cysteine

One of two naturally occurring sulfur amino acids. The other is the essential amino acid, methionine.

Although cysteine isn't essential it can work in concert with methionine to meet the total requirement for sulfur amino acids.

Vitamins/Minerals

Vitamins are organic compounds that function as parts of enzyme systems essential for the transmission of energy and the regulation of metabolisms of the body. Minerals are inorganic substances essential for a host of vital processes within the body. AAFCO regulates minimum standard quantities of vitamins and minerals in levels that pets need to survive. All pet food manufacturers supplement their products with vitamins and minerals. Beyond meeting these minimum requirements, all Natura products contain a complete vitamin and mineral supplement program that helps pets to thrive, not just survive. The minerals Natura uses are chelated, providing three to ten times greater assimilation than common minerals. Our products also contain microorganism supplements, which are not required by the AAFCO minimums. Included in our foods are some of the following: Ascorbic Acid, Beta Carotene, Biotin, Calcium Carbonate, Calcium Iodate, Choline Chloride, Cobalt Carbonate, Cobalt Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Dicalcium Pantothenate, dl-Methionine, Iron Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Niacin, Potassium Chloride, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin C Supplement (Sodium Ascorbate), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement (Alpha Tocopherol), Zinc Proteinate Natura adds these important vitamins and minerals, in proper balance to its foods to ensure that your pet gets all the necessary nutrients for life and good health every day.
